Offers for schools and kids

The D-CHAB aims to give interested children, young people, students, and teachers an insight into chemistry, laboratory work, and studies whenever possible - either through its own events or through participation in ETH events such as Scientifica, Treffpunkt Science City, Maturandentage, Zukunftstag, ETH unterwegs or Public Tours.

On the occasion of Girls and Women in Science Day in February, the Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences (D-CHAB) invites interested schoolgirls between the ages of 12 and 15 to take an exciting look behind the scenes on Wednesday, 14 February 2024 from 14:00 to 17:00! The event is held in German language.

For questions and discussions about the study programs (Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Interdisciplinary Natural Sciences, Biochemistry/Chemical Biology, and Pharmaceutical Sciences) study advisors, students, and doctoral students of the department are available at the two annual information days. In addition, professors from the chemical institutes as well as from the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences give talks on their research, their careers, and various career prospects.

Information on the schedule and program of the information days can be found on the ETH website:  Study Information Days for High School Graduates

In 2012, 2015, 2018, and 2021, D-CHAB participated in the program of the HSGYM University Days of the Zurich Secondary Schools, a continuing education program for middle school chemistry teachers including laboratory tours, lectures, information on the study programs Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Interdisciplinary Natural Sciences, information on studying at D-CHAB, the Didactic Training in Chemistry, and Practical Basic Training in Chemistry.

Since 2002, the Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences has been offering 2-3 afternoons per year for institutions or schools by appointment, during which 20 to 30 children aged 7-12 years can carry out experiments under the supervision of experienced D-CHAB assistants and researchers.

Participants will be provided with lab coats and safety glasses and will receive a Junior Chemistry Diploma.

The event is held in German language.

Please send general inquiries to Julia Ecker.

Please note that due to insurance reasons, registrations are not possible via D-CHAB, but only via the respective organizations/institutions such as KinderUni, KIHZ, etc.

Thank you for your understanding.

Middle school girls' days 2001–2005

The D-CHAB's programs for middle school girls' days from 2001 to 2005 were specifically designed to increase the percentage of women students in chemistry and to provide information about the study of chemistry and careers for women chemists.

Internships 2001–2007

From 2001 to 2007, interested students in the year before the Matura had the opportunity to do a three-week trial internship with a visit to various research groups.

School visits

Quite a few faculty members from the department visited schools by invitation, gave presentations on the D-CHAB degree programs, and presented career profiles of chemistry graduates.

Other events with participation of the D-CHAB

In addition to its own events for the public, D-CHAB also participates in events organized by ETH Zurich. Opportunities to gain insight into research, carry out experiments, or visit laboratories are offered at external page Scientifica (every two years), at Science City (twice a year), at the annual "Zukunftstag", and several times a year at guided tours - the latter are coordinated by Public Tours ETH Zurich. We are also represented at the study information days and at schools as part of ETH unterwegs. For more information, please refer to the pages linked here.
