Exhibitions D-CHAB

Sometimes pictures and objects can tell us more than words. This is also true in chemistry. Inspired by different events and occasions, D-CHAB's public relations team designs new exhibitions. A visit is worthwhile!

Albert Eschenmoser: June–August 2025

Enlarged view: Detail der Eschenmoser-Ausstellung 2025

Albert Eschenmoser had a significant influence on organic and bioorganic chemistry in the 20th century. He made fundamental contributions to the theory of terpene biosynthesis, to the structural elucidation of natural products, to stereochemistry and reaction mechanisms in organic and bioorganic chemistry, to the development of new methods of organic synthesis, to the total synthesis of complex natural products and to the chemical etiology of biomolecular structures.

He would have been 100 years old in August 2025. To mark the occasion, the Chemistry | Biology | Pharmacy Information Center is dedicating an exhibition to him.

Location: HCI G 5.1, ETH Hönggerberg, in the entrance area of the Information Center. Free admission during opening hours.

The Art of Chemistry - running since July 10, 2023

“The Art of Chemistry” exhibition – visitable at ETH’s Hönggerberg campus (HCI / H-floor) and online, curated by Julia Ecker and Oliver Renn (PR D-CHAB) – approaches science in a different way. 13 large pictures provide insights into the D-CHAB’s research and illustrate that chemistry is not only exciting, but beautiful – even truly artistic.

Location: HCI building, H floor, Vladimir-Prelog-Weg 10, 8093 Zurich.  Free entrance, opening hours: Mo-Fr, 8.00-18 Uhr (= opening hours HCI building).

Female scientists as role models: Feb. 22 – March 8, 22

Bücherausstellung Women in science

Anyone who wants to be successful in the natural sciences must be talented, persistent – and historically male, it sometimes seems. However, there are many female role models with research successes – both in the past and today. On the International Day of Women & Girls in Science, we want to bring attention to these with this article, an online quiz, and a book exhibition at the Chemistry | Biology | Pharmacy Information Center (HCI building, G floor on the Hönggerberg) which runs until March 8. The project was realized in cooperation with the Information Center Chemistry | Biology | Pharmacy and Wall of Scientists.

Chemical and Pharmacognostic Collection

The historical Chemical and Pharmacognostic Collection in the HCI building highlights some of the many faces of chemistry. More than 1000 pieces take you into the exciting world of Prof. Carl Hartwich's stimulants and addictive substances from all over the world, an esoteric collection of books about herbs, colorful dyes such as tar dyes or indigo-dyed Levi's jeans, and even bizarre instruments used in chemistry laboratories. In addition, the life and work of Nobel Prize winners in chemistry spanning 150 years as well as a virtual 3D tour of an ETH Zurich chemistry laboratory from 1900 are all awaiting discovery.

Location: HCI building, H floor, Vladimir-Prelog-Weg 10, 8093 Zurich. Free entrance, opening hours: Mo-Fr, 8.00-18 Uhr (= opening hours HCI building).
