With heartfelt sadness, the Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences announces that our colleague Prof. em. Otto Sticher passed away on March 11, 2022 at the age of 86.

Bill Morandi (LOC) is appointed as Full Professor of Synthetic Organic Chemistry. His work focuses on developing new concepts in catalysis for transforming feedstocks into polymers and other building blocks for applications in medicine & materials science. Karl-​Heinz Altmann (IPW), Full Professor of Pharmaceutical Biology since 2013, will retire at the end of July 2022. His research has been devoted to the synthesis of biologically active natural products and to medicinal chemistry.

The natural sciences have historically always been a man's field. In some respects, this is still the case – at least at the executive level. Prof. Maksym Kovalenko (LAC) drove from Zurich to Moldova to evacuate his mother and mother-​in-law from war-​torn Ukraine to safety in Switzerland. In an interview with Internal news, the Ukrainian-​born professor talks about his 68-​hour drive and how it feels to work and teach at ETH while his home country is under attack.
