Prof. van Bokhoven's publication on how fast electron crystallography can fundamentally change the way of atomic structure determination of small molecules is a runner-up for Science's 2018 Breakthrough of the Year!
Why didn’t we think to do this earlier? Matthew Warren, Nature, 29 October 2018
Every year, Science’s editors and writers choose a significant development as the external page Breakthrough of the Year, as well as nine runners-up. This year, external page a publication in Angewandte Chemie from Prof. Jeroen van Bokhoven and a team of researchers from Germany and Switzerland made it to the runners-up list. Their paper on combining detectors used in synchrotron facilities with technology from cryo-electron microscopy shows how tiny crystals of molecules – e.g. found in the powder of drug capsules – can be used to determine the three-dimensional atomic structures in very fast time. This technology could speed up the work of chemists and could also revolutionize the field of crystallography. Some examples of the resonance in the scienitific news after this publication are linked below.
